Mas Ermieyati: I will remain independent
MELAKA: Masjid Tanah member of parliament Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin has made it clear that she will remain independent and refrain from joining any political party.
The former Puteri Umno chief, who quit the party in July, said she would not follow in the footsteps of Jeli MP Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, who joined Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) on Friday.
“I am an independent MP and I have no plans to join any party.
“Mustapa’s entry to PPBM will not stop me from serving my constituency as an independent representative,” she told the New Straits Times Press.
She said she was more comfortable serving the people without being affiliated to any political organisation.
On Sept 18, Mustapa, fondly known as Tok Pa, quit Umno after spending more than 40 years in the party.
Mustapa said he chose Bersatu as he was confident that he could play a more effective role in upholding the interests of the people of Jeli and Kelantan as a whole.
Mas Ermieyati had quit Umno on the grounds that the party had strayed from its struggles, which caused the Malays to reject the 72-year-old party in the 14th General Election.
In Ipoh, Bagan Serai MP Datuk Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali hinted that he would be joining Pakatan Harapan soon as he was keen on championing the people’s welfare as well as development in his constituency.
He said he would not remain an independent candidate for long, adding that he would continue to support the PH government.
“I’ve yet to decide on joining any party. I’ve yet to receive any invitation (from any political party).
“However, I will not remain an independent for long. My priority is the people of Bagan Serai and its development.”
On June 24, Dr Noor Azmi announced that he was leaving Umno and Barisan Nasional to support the PH government.
