LOW-COST carrier AirAsia Bhd’s inaugural Kuala Lumpur-Silangit flight touched down at the Silangit International Airport yesterday, marking the airline newest destination in the Asean region.

AirAsia flight AK411, operated by an Airbus A320, departed Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 at 10.40am yesterday with 120 passengers and landed in Silangit International Airport at 11.00am local time.

Silangit International Airport is the main gateway to the magnificent Lake Toba, the largest volcanic lake in Asean and one of the world’s most beautiful lakes.

“As a truly Asean airline, we are proud to bring the world closer to Lake Toba, which is one of the hidden gems in Asean. Our FlyThru services allow guests from 20 cities to travel seamlessly to Silangit with a stopover in Kuala Lumpur.

“We look forward to working closely with all parties, especially the government of Indonesia, in developing Lake Toba as one of the 10 priority tourist destinations,” said AirAsia Malaysia chief executive officer Riad Asmat.

With AirAsia’s Fly-Thru service, guests from 20 cities — Kota Kinabalu, Johor Baru, Kuching Guangzhou, Chongqing, Changsha, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Xi’An, Taipei, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Melbourne, Sydney and Singapore — can now travel to Silangit—Lake Toba seamlessly via Kuala Lumpur.
