COPS QUIZ MP OVER MOLEST CASE
Process took a while as lawmaker claims he was unwell, wanted breaks, says source
POLICE yesterday interrogated a Perlis member of parliament for seven hours to assist in an investigation into an allegation that he had molested a 15-year-old girl.
A source said the parliamentarian, who was a former cabinet minister during the Barisan Nasional administration, went to give his statement about 10am.
The source said the investigation conducted by the Sexual Assault, Abuse and Children Investigation Division (D11) took a long time as the MP asked for breaks as he was not feeling well.
“The MP arrived in Bukit Aman at 10am. The interrogation took a long time because officers had to stop the recording a few times to give the MP some time to rest,” said the source, adding that police finished taking the MP’s statement at 5pm and might call him again if needed.
Malaysian Crime Watch (MyWatch) chairman Datuk R. Sri Sanjeevan had reportedly claimed that there was an attempt to cover up a sexual assault incident involving a teenager and a VVIP.
He claimed that the girl was molested by the MP in a car in Kangar, Perlis, on Oct 20, but no action had been taken.
He said the incident occurred at 11.30pm after the victim finished performing with a band at a programme attended by the MP.
The teenager reported the incident to her parents before making a report at the Kangar police station at 2.50am, about three hours after the incident.
On Monday, Perlis police chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Noor Mushar Mohd had denied that police were attempting to cover up the incident, saying police were investigating the case even though the teenager’s family had withdrawn the report.
He said police had recorded statements from 10 individuals, including the MP, and would give full cooperation to Bukit Aman.
“Police are investigating the case under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.”
