Pahang submits proposal to ease Camerons jam
KUANTAN: The Pahang government has submitted a proposal to alleviate the traffic congestion in Cameron Highlands to the Federal Government.
Its tourism, environment and plantations committee chairman, Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin, said the proposal included opening alternative roads and implementation of one-way routes.
He said the matter, however, would be decided at the federal level as Cameron Highlands was an income generator in the tourism industry, which was one of the sectors contributing to the country’s revenue.
“I can’t say for certain when it would be implemented as we need an allocation from the Federal Government, which also benefits from the revenue (generated by Cameron Highlands).
“We suggested measures to ease the congestion by creating an alternative route or implementing a one-way road (system),” he said after launching the state’s tourism product exhibition here yesterday.
Sharkar said the tourism industry was the third largest contributor to the country’s income and needed to be strengthened through clearer vision and directions.
He said cooperation with key players, like hotels, would boost tourism products, particularly in ensuring the products remain relevant.
“With the right strategy, it is not impossible for tourism to be the number one industry in the country,” he said.
On a separate matter, Sharkar, who is an Umno Supreme Council member, dismissed Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Supreme Council member Datuk A. Kadir Jasin’s claim that 40 Umno members of parliament would switch as mere psychological war.
He said the statement by Kadir was proof that the party led by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was unstable.
