THE government is mulling the establishment of a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission to improve the programme.

Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said the TVET Commission was proposed in the last cabinet meeting and to be supervised by two ministries — the Education and Human Resources Ministries.

He said the matter was discussed with TVET Empowerment Committee chairman Nurul Izzah Anwar and the Economic Planning Unit.

“The proposed establishment of this commission reflects the government’s awareness of the need to boost TVET learning to a higher level. Once it is approved, the commission can supervise activities that will be carried out,” he said after the launch of the National Industry Dialogue Programme 2018 here yesterday.

Maszlee witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Education Ministry and Panasonic Appliances Air-Condition Malaysia Sdn Bhd, represented by its managing director, Hiroyuki Iwaki; Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd, represented by its chief executive officer, Marco Neelsen, and Advance Pact Sdn Bhd, represented by its executive director, Mohd Hidzir Khamis.

The MoU will establish links between the industry and academia, as well as build networks between parties involved in human capital development and TVET institutions.

Maszlee said after the TVET Commission had been formed, the seven ministries involved would proceed with their programmes that would be supervised by the Education and Human Resources Ministries.

He said the commission would ensure smoother and better implementation of TVET operations.

He said today’s dialogue session helped churn out ideas from academicians, government agencies and industry players to shape the country’s TVET economy and future.

“The dialogue session discussed challenges and the direction of TVET graduates.”
