Govt should emulate past administration, says Hadi

MARANG: Pas has advised the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government to emulate the measures taken by the previous government in addressing the issue of ratifying the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).

Its president, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, said ICERD had no place in Malaysia as the constitution had guaranteed freedom of religion and equal rights to all races.

He said Islam, as it was enshrined in the constitution, gave better provisions for the treatment of the different races than ICERD.

“We expect the government to take a step in addressing this matter as demonstrated by the previous administration since independence in 1957,” he said at the Darul Iman Madrasah launching ceremony here yesterday.

Hadi, who is also Marang member of parliament, believed the convention was formulated to restrict the freedom of Muslims.

“ICERD was formulated to monitor and act against Muslims. It is targeting Islam and not any other religion,” he said.

Pas previously warned that it would mobilise millions of people on the street to show their dissatisfaction should ICERD be ratified.

Umno and Pas previously claimed that ratifying ICERD would jeopardise the rights of Malays and Bumiputera as enshrined in the constitution.
