15 eateries slapped with temporary closure notices

-

GEORGE TOWN: Not only are their surroundings filthy, but the cooking utensils in the kitchens are also found to be breeding grounds for cockroaches and rats.

These are reasons enough for 15 eateries in the Bayan Lepas Industrial Zone to be slapped with various notices, including temporary closure, during the Op Penang Sihat 9/2018.

The operation earlier yesterday found that cleanliness at the eateries inspected were at an all-time low.

Southwest district health officer Dr Umarazina Abdul Kadir said the operation, which involved three agencies, also found Ketum drink and cough mixture in one of the kitchens of the eateries checked.

“All the eateries have been slapped with temporary closure to enable cleaning work to be carried out.

“We will also lodge a police report following the recovery of ketum concoction and cough mixture, so that police can probe the matter,” she said.

Dr Umarazina said 51 premises were inspected and RM6,400 in total compounds issued.

She said actions were taken under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983 and Food Regulation 1985, among others.

Dr Umarazina said for smoking offences, traders were found selling cigarettes below the permissible market price and minimum price.

“We seized items worth RM965.50. Besides eateries, we also checked sundry shops, construction sites, hospital, clinics and government offices,” she added.
