Wee Wern faces bigger test in Hong Kong

- Fadhli Ishak

spending almost two years on the sidelines due to injury, national squash player Low Wee Wern is looking forward to competing in her first major PSA tournament — the Hong Kong Open which starts on Monday.

Wee Wern has already done well to pick up four PSA titles in smaller tournaments since her comeback in July — at the Malaysian Open, Tasmanian Open, Australian Open and Q Open (Queensland).

But the US$164,500 (RM689,148) Hong Kong Open will be a stern test as she will line up against some of the best players in the world.

The draw is out and the 28year-old will be playing Zeina Mickawy, who is World No 32, in the opening round whom she has never faced before.

“This is my first major tournament so I am very much looking forward to it.

“Preparation has gone well so far,” said Wee Wern, who is ranked No 52.

“I have never played her before (Zeina) but she recently won a tournament in Egypt.

“I am not sure of her playing style but I’m sure she is very talented and plays an attacking game like most of the Egyptians.”

Zeina, 20, earlier this month won the CIB Wadi Degla Tournament in Egypt where she defeated fellow Egyptian Nada Abbas in the final.

Fellow national player S. Sivasangari will face Hania El Hammamy, who is also Egyptian, in the opening round while squash great Nicol David, who is seeded 11th, has been given a bye.

Nicol will play either England’s Millie Tomlinson or Nada in the second round.

The men’s event will see Nafiizwan Adnan playing Hong Kong’s Henry Leung in the first round while Ng Eain Yow has Scotland’s Greg Lobban to deal with.
