Perfect day for shuttlers
was a perfect day for the Malaysian camp in Markham, Canada.
All their shuttlers, who took to court on Thursday at the World Junior Championships, reached the quarter-finals.
Youth Olympic Games champion Goh Jin Wei got the ball rolling for the national squad with a 21-11, 21-10 win over Canada’s Wendy Zhang, in the girls’ singles fourth round.
Former world junior champion Jin Wei was scheduled to play South Korea’s So Yul Lee last night for a place in the semi-finals.
Accompanying Jin Wei to the last eight was Eoon Qi Xuan, who defeated Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani 21-19, 21-10. Qi Xuan was set to play Denmark’s Line Christophersen.
In the boys’ singles, both Ng Tze Yong and Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin continued their impressive run, when they booked their quarter-final spots in style.
Tze Yong sent second seed Ikhasan Leonardo Imanuel Rumbay of Indonesia packing in the fourth round with a 21-13, 21-5 win while independent shuttler, Aidil, notched a 21-19, 21-13 win over Japan’s Riku Hatano.
“I am very happy to come this far in the tournament, my target is to at least reach the quarterfinals. Previously, my best was only a third round appearance.
“However, I cannot be complacent. There is still a long way to go for me in this competition,” said the 18-year-old, who will join the national setup (BA of Malaysia) next month.
Tze Yong was playing Japan’s Kodai Naraoka of Japan while Aidil took on fourth seed Lakshya Sen of India in the last eight late yesterday.
Girls’ doubles, Pearly Tan-Toh Ee Wei and mixed doubles Chia Wei Jie-Ee Wei, were the other Malaysian shuttlers who cleared the fourth round on Thursday.
