Zainal is new Perodua president, CEO
RAWANG: Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) has appointed Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad as its new president and chief executive officer (CEO), effective January 1.
Zainal will succeed Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh, who has served Perodua for nine years and is its longestserving president and CEO.
Under Aminar’s leadership, Perodua’s market share expanded from 31.2 per cent in 2010 to more than 37 per cent as of year-to-date.
During his time, the carmaker started the much-needed transformation initiative. Perodua’s aftersales improved significantly, as well as its cost efficiency, quality and delivery.
The carmaker also embarked on a RM1.3 billion investment to build Perodua Global Manufacturing Sdn Bhd, Malaysia’s first energy-efficient vehicle plant.
Zainal was previously vicepresident of Perodua Auto Corp Sdn Bhd. He is expected to further improve the carmaker’s efficiency and competitiveness and expand its export business.
“Perodua’s board of directors look to Zainal to lead the charge as he has the capability in managing Perodua, its vendors, suppliers and dealers to become regional players,” said Perodua chairman Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin.
“Zainal has proven his ability to work well with shareholders, including Daihatsu Motor Co of Japan, in bringing new technology to Perodua and encouraging investments within the country,” he added.
Zainal holds a bachelor’s degree in management information systems and accounting from the Pacific Lutheran University, Washington, United States.
He began his career in Perodua in 1995 in the cost control department, and was directly involved in creating Perodua’s manufacturing cost structure.
Zainal will be the first president and CEO selected from within the Perodua group.
He participated in the formulation of the National Automotive Policy and is working closely with the government through various bodies under the International Trade and Industry Ministry.
Zainal was instrumental in establishing the Sendayan, Negri Sembilan powertrain hub, which incorporated Daihatsu Perodua Engine Manufacturing Sdn Bhd and transmission plant Akashi Kikai Sdn Bhd.
