SHAH ALAM: A police officer with the rank of assistant superintendent was sentenced to three years’ jail and fined RM20,000, in default a year’s jail, for accepting a RM4,000 bribe from a construction company owner last year.

Judge Datuk Ahmad Zamzani Mohd Zain handed down the sentence on Rantai Anak Giling, 47, of the Gombak district police headquarters, after finding that the prosecution had succeeded in establishing the case beyond reasonable doubt.

The prosecution was represented by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecuting officer Michael Joimin.

However, Zamzani allowed an application by counsel M. Athimulan, for a stay of the sentence and fine, pending an appeal and to maintain the RM8,000 bail imposed on Rantai.

Rantai was charged with accepting the bribe from one Azizur Rahman as an inducement for Rantai to release his Bangladeshi worker, who was detained for allegedly not having a valid work permit.

Rantai, who has been with the police force for 21 years, was charged with committing the offence at a restaurant in Batu Caves, Gombak near here, at 5.50pm on March 29 last year.

In another case, a driving school owner, Lee Kah Loong, 36, pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here to accepting RM4,800 to help obtain a driving licence for an Indonesian worker.

Lee was charged with accepting the bribe from one Shahrul Izam Yaacob to obtain a driving licence for Khoirul Nisam, without going through the proper procedure stipulated by the Road Transport Department.

He had allegedly committed the offence at a driving school at Uptown Damansara near here at 5.50pm on May 24, 2016.

Judge Adli Abdul Ghalib allowed Lee to be freed on bail of RM8,000 with one surety and fixed Jan 7 for mention.

The prosecution was conducted by MACC deputy public prosecutor Hazirah Azema, while Lee was unrepresented.
