ZAHID: I’LL QUIT WHEN MAJORITY TELLS ME TO
Umno president will not bow to pressure, claims party support has risen
EMBATTLED Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he will step down only if a majority of party delegates demand that he does so during a special assembly.
Zahid, who remains adamant in his legitimacy as Umno’s elected head despite the exodus of top leaders and parliamentarians from the party, called on members to remain united in the face of challenges.
“I will not bow to demands by certain people who want me to step down (as president). I will step down only based on Umno rules and constitution, which state that two-thirds of the delegates must support it during a special general assembly.
“I will also adhere to the request by the grassroots, who want Umno to be strengthened and supported after the 14th General Election,” Zahid said.
He also claimed that Umno, as an opposition party, still had major support from the people and its members.
“There has been an increase in support to strengthen Umno.”
He said Umno would continue working with Pas on the Islamic agenda, while maintaining its respect for other races, religions and cultures.
“Umno rejects cooperation with DAP and will not compromise with the agenda to sideline Malays and Islam, which is being done subtly or openly.
“Umno must close ranks regardless of its members’ disputes or differing opinions for the sake of unity and responsibility to religion, race and country.”
Many party leaders have resigned in this crisis of confidence in Zahid’s leadership.
A number of lawmakers had resigned to become independents or flocked to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia. They are calling for Zahid to step down or call for a new party election.
At least six Umno parliamentarians have resigned up to yesterday, after an exodus in Sabah a few days earlier.
