‘EITHER DELIVER OR OUT YOU GO’

Selvaraj agrees with BAM’s decision of not renewing coaches’ contracts

FORMER BA of Malaysia (BAM) high performance director Datuk James Selvaraj has defended the national body’s move in trimming down the size of the coaching staff ahead of the new season.

Earlier this month, BAM confirmed four coaches — Cheah Soon Kit (men’s doubles), Sairul Amar Ayob (singles), Lim Pek Siah (women’s doubles) and Rony Agustinus (singles) — will not have their contracts renewed.

This is apparently in line with the governing body’s new strategic plan to produce a leaner and meaner squad as they gear up for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

James said: “I am with BAM on this. Let’s be honest, regardless of the industry you’re in, if you cannot deliver then out you go.

“These coaches will have to make way as they have not produced outstanding results. This is normal in sports.

“It is still uncertain if BAM will hire new coaches in the coming days, but I feel they should just focus on the existing ones and set higher KPIs (Key Performance Indicators).

“Everyone has a role to play within a certain time frame. If you are unable to achieve a certain target then unfortunately you must be prepared to pack and leave,” said James.

It is, however, learnt that some of the coaches affected did not see this coming and are currently in limbo.

One of the coaches, who did not wish to be named, said: “It came as a surprise, I honestly did not know that they (BAM) would not renew my contract.

“Right now, I really don’t know what I will be doing next,” said the coach.

Apart from coaches, BAM are also expected to axe several national players to bring down the squad to 48 players only.
