Peng Soon-Liu Ying running out of time for new season

- Helmi Talkah

is not on Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying’s side as they ended their season on a low by failing to qualify for the semifinals of the BWF World Tour Finals in Guangzhou.

This is because the mixed doubles pair have only about three weeks to prepare for the new season, starting with the Thailand Masters on Jan 8-13.

“Of course, we are disappointed as we had chances of at least reaching the semifinals here. However, we need to forget about it and move on.

“We will return to Kuala Lumpur and focus on preparing for next season. It is an Olympic qualifying season in 2019, so we need to be prepared though we do not have much time to do it,” said Liu Ying in Guangzhou yesterday.

Drawn in Group B in Guangzhou, Peng Soon-Liu Ying lost to China’s Wang YilyuHuang Dongping (22-20, 21-13) and Japan’s Yuta Watanabe-Arisa Higashino (21-9, 21-18).

Their only win was against Indonesia’s Hafiz Faizal-Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja (21-14, 21-12).

Compatriots Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie also failed to shine, losing all of three matches in Group A.

Mixed doubles coach Chin Eei Hui said Soon Huat-Shevon’s goal in the tournament was to gain experience playing against the best pairs in the world.

“I will now work on their weaknesses, and hopefully, they will be better prepared for the new season,” said Eei Hui.
