Nicol’s farewell dream lives on

- “Millie played well in the last one,” Nicol told

champion Nicol David was in formidable form as she defeated England’s Millie Tomlinson in straight games to reach the third round of the World Championships at Union Station in Chicago on Sunday.

The World No 21, who announced last week that she would retire in June, was flawless as she ousted 22nd ranked Millie with a 11-5, 11-4, 11-7 victory in 28 minutes.

It was sweet revenge for Nicol as she had lost to the English woman in Hong Kong last year.

The 13th seeded Malaysian was playing World No 5 Camille Serme in a late match yesterday.

“I knew she was going to come out strong, so I had to step up my game.

“I was focused and played consistently.

“I really played well today to beat Millie in three. I was really pleased with that match.

“You just know in your gut that you need to find that time and now it’s about enjoying these moments in a great venue.

“After playing the way I played, I just want to be happy and fresh and anything goes when you step on that court and I’m just hoping for the best.”

Camille Serme, fifth seed, booked her place with a comprehensive 11-2, 11-5, 11-7 victory over Englishwoman Lisa Aitken.

The Frenchwoman was in complete control throughout, giving away just 15 points in the match.

Apart from Nicol, the other Asians in the third round are Hong Kong’s Annie Au and Joey Chan.

Egyptians Raneem El Welily, Nouran Gohar, Nour El Tayeb and Nour El Sharbini all made it to the next round.
