FOUR categories of students will be given special consideration for admissions into public universities. They are people with disabilities (OKU), athletes, Orang Asli and those in the B40 income group.

Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said students from these groups would need to compete only among themselves and not with those in the mainstream group, having fulfilled the academic requirements set by the universities.

“This is a manifestation of the concept ‘Education for All’ that is rooted in the philosophy of equal opportunity,” he said at the event to launch Jom Masuk IPT 2019 at the main campus of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn in Batu Pahat.

Maszlee said Jom Masuk IPT 2019 was regarded as the ministry’s signature programme and it should be carried out effectively.

“This programme would serve as a one-stop centre to get the latest information on opportunities for higher education in Malaysia, mainly admission to public universities, polytechnics, community colleges, skills-learning institutions and other institutions for the 2019/2020 academic session,” he said.

The programme will be conducted in five other zones covering a number of cities and towns nationwide.

They are the Sabah Zone (Kota Kinabalu, March 9 and 10), Northern Zone (USM Penang, March 9 and 10), Eastern Zone (Kota Bharu, Kelantan, March 16 and 17), Sarawak Zone (Kuching, March 23 and 24) and Middle Zone (MAEPS, Serdang, March 30 and 31).

The one-stop centre also provides information relating to postgraduate studies and opportunities to further studies abroad.
