Clean eats that pack a punch

Nadia Badarudin scours the city for some of the best cafes serving healthy foods

- SIMPLE AND NATURAL FOODS

KLANG Valley is currently bursting with cool cafes offering food to whet the appetite of the healthconscious crowd which is growing in numbers. With terms like real food and honest food employed to suggest guilt-free food choices, these eateries prove that healthy food does not necessarily mean you have to go cold turkey on tasty selections.

They show that healthy food can be delicious too, and is not limited to only salads and fruits. Most of the meals are prepared using fresh ingredients, are nutrient-packed and frequently cater to current food trends that incline towards the use of superfoods such as quinoa and chia seeds. FromleanerversionsofMalaysian favourites to Asian- or Westerninfluenced or a fusion of both worlds, the options are aplenty, with some dishes carefully prepared with input from nutritionists and dietitians. What’s interesting is that these foodie spots do not only cater to vegetarians, vegans, gym buffs or anyone on a diet. They serve as good alternatives for all, including children, who are keen to start eating healthy but want to enjoy their food at the same time. KURIN started in 2017 as a healthy food delivery project. It promotes the eat-clean concept, offering healthy and tasty food which can be customised to suit different health needs. Kurin is ideal for fans of raw salads and fish. It is well-known for its signature Pokkeritowrap (Japanese sushi roll the size of a Mexican burrito) and Poke bowl.

Poke is a Hawaiian cuisine made of diced raw fish served with fresh greens and lean proteins. The ingredients — suitable for vegetarians and organic eaters — are changed frequently to ensure freshness and variety.

The Big Poke Bowl. Try one with Norwegian salmon, or the soft and sweet torched tuna with wasabi mayo, greens, beans, cherry tomatoes and corn. If you’re a bodybuilder, grab Kurin’s high protein combo set (contains ovengrilled salmon) that comes with a quinoa protein shake. And don’t forget to try the chia seed pudding from its open fridge.
