THE 2018 Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) showed better results with more candidates achieving a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.0 than in the previous year.

Malaysian Examinations Council (MEC) chairman Professor Datuk Dr Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal said 666 candidates scored 4.0, a 0.42 per cent increase from 485 candidates in 2017.

He said the number of students who scored a CGPA of 3.50 increased from 6,408 in 2017 to 7,129, while there were more students with a CGPA of 3.0 and above, from 17,423 in 2017 to 18,113.

“The national CGPA score also improved to 2.80 compared with 2.76 in 2017,” he said when announcing the results in Seri Kembangan yesterday.

Zul Azhar said what more encouraging was that 489 of the 666 candidates or 73.42 per cent, who scored a CGPA of 4.00, were from the B40 group.

“The results shows that the gap between rural and urban candidates has narrowed to 0.01 points from 0.03 previously.

“This year, the CGPA for urban candidates was 2.80 and 2.79 for rural areas.”

He said the number of candidates scoring 5As and 4As increased from 521 in 2017 to 673, or a 1.57 per cent rise.

In general, all 22 subjects offered in the 2018 STPM recorded full pass of more than 70 per cent with Grade C and above.

Three subjects — Biology, Physics and Information and Communication Technology — showed an increase in full pass by three per cent compared with 2017.

Zul Azhar said effective from Sep 1, a new subject, Tahfiz AlQuran STPM, would be introduced.
