Man remanded for allegedly abusing 2 sons
GEORGE TOWN: A 53-year-old man, suspected of abusing his two sons, has been remanded for a day to assist police in their investigation.
The remand order was granted yesterday by assistant court registrar Muna Maria Azmi.
Police are investigating the man under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries imprisonment of up to 10 years or a fine not exceeding RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.
Northeast police chief Assistant Commissioner Che Zaimani Che Awang said police were alerted to the alleged abuse after the state Welfare Department officials brought the boys, aged 11 and 13, to the police station four days ago.
“On March 1, at 6.30pm, the boys ran away from their home in Taman Tun Sardon, while their father, who is a driver, was at work.
“They claimed that they ran away because their father had been abusing them by beating them up for the smallest of mistakes.
“They said the last time the elder boy was beaten was in December. He suffered injuries, but was not taken to hospital or clinic for treatment.”
He said one of the boys had a bruised left eye, while the other had a fractured right rib.
“The boys said lately, their father had been beating the younger boy more and had even stepped on him in January until his rib was fractured,” he said.
Che Zaimani said the boys had been sleeping at their friends’ house and near an apartment in Bukit Gambir after running away from their home.
“They were found by a security guard and handed over to the state Welfare Department.
“They are receiving treatment at Penang Hospital.”
He said police had recorded their statements, taken photographs of the injuries and the scenes of the alleged abuses.
