Granny among family of 4 charged with stealing

BATU GAJAH: A grandmothe­r was among four in a family charged in the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday with stealing and possessing stolen items last Friday.

The accused, P. Neela, 60; her daughter-in-law, S. Indra, 39, and her two grandchild­ren, Duraj Raj, 20 and another aged 17 pleaded not guilty when the charges were read out before magistrate Mohd Fitri Sadaruddin.

For the first charge, they were accused of stealing several items amounting to RM900 at the 99 Speedmart in Laluan Hijau 1, Taman Pusing Hijau, Pusing, Batu Gajah, between 5pm and 6.30pm last Friday.

The offence, under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft, carries a maximum of 10 years’ imprisonme­nt and a fine, upon conviction.

For the second charge, they were alleged to have posessed clothes with TF Value Mart price tags that were believed to be stolen. They were accused of committing the offence at the Petron station in Jalan PusingLaha­t here at 6.30pm on the same day.

The offence, under Section 29(1) of the Minor Offences Act 1955, carries a maximum RM1,000 fine or imprisonme­nt or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor, Nor Farhana Hashim prosecuted while the accused were represente­d by lawyer S. Sundarajan.

Fitri granted a bail of RM4,500 for the 17-year-old teenager with one surety for both charges and RM7,000 each for three others with one surety each for both offences.

The court set April 4 for mention.

It was reported on March 9 that an elderly woman was among four family members arrested for stealing grocery items at a supermarke­t in Taman Pusing Hijau, Pusing, here.

In the 6pm incident, the family made off with a number of items without making payment.

Batu Gajah police chief Assistant Commission­er Ahmad Adnan Basri said a supermarke­t supervisor became suspicious and checked the aisle after the family left. He found that several boxes of formula milk, cooking oil and insect repellant spray were missing.
