Elderly woman allegedly abused by children

-

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A 64-year-old woman, believed to be a victim of physical abuse, was “rescued” by the Penang police yesterday.

She had injuries on the head and body, including old fractures, when she was found at her Desa Wawasan flat unit.

Seberang Prai Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the flat’s chairman alerted the police at 1pm, saying that the woman, who was staying at a 12th floor unit, was injured, but could not leave her home for treatment.

The woman was then taken to the Bukit Mertajam Hospital.

“The victim claimed she sustained the injuries from a fall, and denied that she was beaten up by her children.

“Checks showed she also suffered from depression. But she is in a stable condition,” he said.

Nik Ros Azhan said the victim was staying at the flat unit with her 32-year-old son, 35-year-old daughter and 28-year-old daughter-in-law, who are all unemployed.

He said her children were also believed to have mental issues while the daughter-in-law was a disabled person.

The family, he said, survived on zakat money and aid from the Welfare Department. “When money runs out, they go begging around the town.”

Nik Ros Azhan said the Welfare Department was working to refer the victim and her two children for psychiatric evaluation.

The case, he added, was being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means.
