Ex-cameraman admits posting offensive remarks against Hindus

KUALA LUMPUR: A former production company photograph­er pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court here to two counts of posting remarks deemed offensive to Hindus on his Facebook account last week.

The sentencing of Zamri Abdul Razak, 52, will take place next Monday. The accused appeared calm while he pleaded guilty to the two charges before judge Zamri Bakar.

On the two counts, Zamri, who is freelance photograph­er, was accused of posting two offensive comments via his Facebook profile, Zamri Bin Abd Razak, with the intention to annoy any person.

According to the charges, the contents were read by another Facebook user, under the name of Saravana Kumar, at the Cyber Crime and Multimedia Investigat­ion Division, Commercial Crime Investigat­ion Department, Bukit Aman police headquarte­rs here at 12.45pm on March 10.

The charge, under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communicat­ions and Multimedia Act 1998, carries a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or jail for a term not exceeding a year or both, and shall also be liable to a further fine of RM1,000 for every day during which the offence is continued after conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Muhamad Asyraf Md Kamal asked for a postponeme­nt of the sentencing to Monday for the prosecutio­n to prepare the facts of the case.

“We are not offering bail pending the date of sentencing.”

Zamri, a father of three, pleaded for a minimum bail as he had to take care of his ailing father.

“My father is suffering from a heart disease and lives in Bentong, Pahang.”

Asyraf submitted that the court should consider the seriousnes­s of the offence and that there were many cases involving postings of religious insults.

The court allowed a RM15,000 bail to the accused with one surety.
