‘Sin Chew’ deputy editor a cancer survivor, says ex-colleague

KUALA LUMPUR: Datin Tai Siew Kim, deputy executive editor-inchief of Sin Chew Daily, who was killed in the quake-triggered landslide in Lombok, Indonesia on Sunday, was a caring, friendly and helpful superior.

Tai’s former subordinate, Koh Chiew Heong, 39, said she was more than a colleague.

“She was the same age as my mother. She was like family.

“I remember I had spinal problems after I delivered my first child a few years ago. The doctor advised me to change my working hours, as I could not sit too long in the car.

“When I told her about it, she granted my request without hesitation.

“She was always willing to listen to your problems and help where she could,” she said yesterday.

Tai was one of two Malaysians killed in the landslide. The other victim was Lim Sai Wah.

They were among 22 Malaysians at the Tiu Kelep waterfall when the 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck at 2.07pm local time.

Koh said she could not believe Tai was gone.

“I received a message on the incident at 5.30pm, but I read it only around 10pm. I thought it was fake news.

“When I saw the news and her photo, I burst into tears.

“She battled breast cancer a few years ago and recovered. She was such a strong person.”

Koh said Tai would tell her subordinates to help the underprivileged.

“She always reminded us to be responsible journalists and to report the truth.”

Another staff member, who declined to be named, said Tai was warm and caring.

“She always encouraged and offered advice when we faced problems. I will miss her kind words and pleasant smile.”
