ASENIOR policeman and a Fire and Rescue Department personnel were charged with five counts of bribery at the Sessions Court here yesterday.

Inspector Mohd Alfian Mohd Zainal, who was the Kajang police station chief, and Shah Kamil Ghani of the Pandan Indah Fire and Rescue station, were accused of allegedly receiving RM3,000 from Wong Cheng Keong in 2016.

Both pleaded not guilty to all the charges, which fall under the Penal Code and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act.

On the first and second count, Alfian, 34, was accused of accepting RM500 on two occasions from Wong at 10.53pm on Sept 27, 2016 and 11.27pm on Oct 25, 2016 at the Kajang police station.

Alfian faces up to two years’ jail, a fine or both, upon conviction.

MACC prosecution officer Michael Joimin offered bail of RM10,000 for each charge in one surety and requested Alfian’s passport be impounded.

Alfian’s counsel, Muhammad Hidhir Mustapa, pleaded for the

bail to be reduced to RM1,000 for each charge.

Sessions Court judge Rofiah Mohamad allowed bail of RM6,000 for each charge in one surety and rejected the request for Alfian’s passport to be impounded. She set April 30 for mention.

Shah Kamil, 35, allegedly accepted RM2,000 from Wong on three occasions to assist in obtaining a business licence application support letter from the Fire and Rescue Department in his capacity as a Grade KB19 personnel for a company named JJ Harmony Spa.

On the first and second count, Shah Kamil was believed to have committed the offences on March 30, 2016, at 12.05pm at the Pandan Indah Fire and Rescue station in Pandan Indah by receiving RM1,000 and RM500, respectively.

On the third count, Shah Kamil was accused of receiving RM500 as fee for the same purpose on April 1, 2016, at 4.10pm at JJ Harmony Spa in Taman Anggerik Perdana, Semenyih.

He faces 20 years’ jail and a fine of not less than five times the bribery amount, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

Joimin offered a bail of RM10,000 for each charge and also asked for Shah Kamil’s passport to be impounded.

Shah Kamil’s counsel, Siti Nadiah Skh Saad, asked for bail to be set at RM1,000 for each count.

Rofiah allowed a bail of RM7,000 for each charge and set April 29 for mention.

Earlier, Rofiah allowed Joimin’s request for a warrant of arrest to be issued against a local council enforcement personnel, who had failed to appear in court to be charged yesterday despite being informed of the proceeding.

Rofiah ordered the personnel to show up in court on April 15.
