COUPLE, CHILD KILLED IN LANGKAWI BLAZE
House believed to be used by family when fisherman husband went out to sea
ACOUPLE and their 6year-old child son were killed in a fire that razed a house in Pangkalan Nelayan Sungai Tepa, Bukit Malut here yesterday.
Mohd Nahar Suhaimi, 38, his wife, Nor Suhaila Hamat, 41, and their youngest child, Muhammad Nawfal Mohd Nahar, were burnt to death in the morning incident.
Langkawi Zone Fire and Rescue Authority chief Fadzullah Mohd Noor said the authorities received a distress call at 7.03am.
Two teams from the Jalan Ayer Hangat and Persiaran Putra Fire and Rescue stations were deployed to the scene.
The house was 80 per cent razed by the time the firemen arrived.
After putting out the blaze, firemen found Nahar’s charred body in the living room, while those of his wife and son were found in the bathroom.
The house is believed to be a transit home for the family whenever Nahar, a fisherman, went out to sea.
The couple had four children. Their bodies were identified by their daughter, Nursyafinaz, 18.
Langkawi police chief Superintendent Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said Nursyafinaz identified her mother from the clothes she was wearing and her younger brother based on his features.
Both victims sustained 80 per cent burns.
“However, she could not identify her father as he had 100 per cent burns.”
The brick house, built farther from the other houses along the river, had a living room, a dining hall, two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Iqbal said the fire was believed to have started from the back of the house.
He said police had opened an investigation paper on the incident. He said the case had been classified as sudden death, pending new developments.
A forensic unit from the Alor Star Fire and Rescue Department and forensic specialists from the state police contingent headquarters are assisting the investigation.
The victims’ bodies were taken to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital for a post-mortem, which will be carried out today.
