Firefly’s Kuantan-Penang route to resume next Monday
KUANTAN: Malaysia’s full-service point-to-point carrier, Firefly, will resume its Kuantan-Penang flights next week after a five-year hiatus.
The inaugural ATR72-500 flight is scheduled to depart from Penang International Airport at 1.10pm for the 90-minute flight to the Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport, here, next Monday.
The return flight is scheduled at 3.05pm the same day.
Firefly, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines, ceased flying on the route in 2014.
A source from Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd said Firefly’s move would present travellers with more options.
This follows AirAsia’s move to resume its Kuala Lumpur-Kuantan route from last October, after a seven-year hiatus.
“Firefly will serve the PenangKuantan and Kuantan-Penang routes four times weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays,” said the source yesterday.
“At the moment, the flights will depart from Penang to Kuantan at 1.10pm and return at 3.05pm.
“Starting next Monday, Firefly will provide a two-way trip, four times a week and may increase the frequencies if there is demand.
“There are also plans to resume the Kuantan-Subang route.”
Pahang Tourism board spokesman said Firefly’s resumption would increase passenger volume travelling to the east coast of the peninsula.
“Malaysia Airlines is the sole airline operating at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport. Previously, Firefly, AirAsia and Malindo Airlines also used to operate, here, but ceased their services. However, Firefly and AirAsia have since made a comeback.”
