A41-YEAR-OLD man was shot when he ran amok and attacked a motorcycle patrol unit (URB) police officer in Bandar Bukit Tinggi here yesterday.

The incident occurred when police received a call from a security guard of a bank that a man was in a fit of rage after failing to withdraw money.

Klang Selatan district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsul Amar Ramli said two URB police officers were despatched to the scene at 12.30pm, but the suspect, a Sabahan, had already left the premises.

“According to the security guard, the suspect told him that he would return, and will run amok if he fails again to withdraw money. About 2pm, police received a call saying that the man was in a fit of rage and holding a knife in front of the bank,” he said yesterday.

Amar said police spent 20 minutes to calm the man down, but he became aggressive and chased one of the policeman with a knife.

Police fired four shots at the suspect in self-defence.

“The man who sustained two gunshot wounds on his abdomen was rushed to Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital. The two policemen were unhurt. The man had apparently smashed one of the automated teller machines after his second attempt to withdraw money failed,” he said.

Police found a packet of white powder, believed to be drugs, inside the suspect’s bag.

He said investigations showed that the suspect had no money in his account.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
