NCIA expects KXP to be an economic game-changer

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kulim International Airport (KXP) will be an economic gamechanger as it will support current developments with potential spillover effects on future developments in the northern region.

The Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) said among others, the airport would help in streamlining the movement of passengers and cargo in the region, thus complementing the Penang International Airport.

“This is vital with the forecast exponential increase in number of passengers and cargo due to the aggressive development in the pipeline for the region,” it said in a statement.

The KXP was also expected to accelerate the socio-economic development in Kulim,

Sungai Petani, Baling, Bandar Baharu and Sik in Kedah; Seberang Perai in Penang, and Kerian and Selama in Perak, said NCIA chief executive Datuk Seri Jebasingam Issace John.

“The airport is anticipated to create between 15,000 and 18,000 jobs, which are essential in reducing poverty and achieving sustainable socio-economic development to narrow the imbalances in all four states.

“This will create more growth opportunities for the Northern Corridor Economic Region,” he added.

The KXP would be in close proximity to ongoing highimpact strategic projects in the region, including the Kulim Hi-Tech Park, Kedah Rubber City, Kedah Science & Technology Park, Greater Kamunting Conurbation and Batu Kawan Development, said NCIA.

The airport would also fuel greater opportunities for the local aviation industry and connectivity infrastructure, said John, adding that its development would be funded by private investors using the Regulatory Asset Base system.
