Stay ahead of the game at TAR UC
TUNKU Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) has always advocated the aspects of being industry-relevant to boost its graduates’ employability.
This has been the practice for its engineering and information and communication technology (ICT) programmes for close to 50 years.
It was to ensure that its graduates will be exposed to the latest industry knowledge and technology, so they can hit the ground running.
With this practise, TAR UC graduates were offered jobs even before their graduation.
It has developed a list of collaborations with local and international industry leaders, thus boosting the quality of TAR UC’s programmes.
In this age of Industry 4.0, industry-relevant education is crucial and TAR UC is taking a leap ahead by providing real-world, hands-on experience to its students through the participation in industry projects, which involve the use of advanced technologies.
For example, TAR UC has established industry collaboration with Penang-based Hotayi Electronic (M) Sdn Bhd (Hotayi) where the collaboration was formalised on March 30, last year. Hotayi is a leading global electronics manufacturing services (EMS) company providing a wide-range of high-value-added manufacturing solutions and services through automation on manufacturing services or better known as smart manufacturing.
This paves the way for staff and students from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FOET) and Faculty of Computing and Information Technology (FOCS) to assist Hotayi in integrating automation and data exchange into the company’s current manufacturing system, hence developing an Industry 4.0 manufacturing system in its factory.
From this, students can work on industry-oriented projects relevant to this partnership,
which include automated production simulation, machine and process data analytics using artificial intelligence, image processing, product data analytics and parts supply chain automation.
TAR UC students are given internship opportunities in Hotayi’s factory where they can complete their internship in sectors which are related to their study.
Chang Qi Tat, who is a final year student of the Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Mechatronic, completed his internship in Hotayi in May last year.
“I was assigned to the test department where my main task was to assist the technicians and engineers in maintaining the machines for quality control. I was able to apply my programming knowledge in TAR UC into my daily work in Hotayi,” he said.
FOET dean Ts Dr Chew Khoon Hee shared his views on how this collaboration will benefit TAR UC students.
“We develop graduates who are employment-ready not only in Malaysia, but also abroad. This will give our students an edge among their peers and widen their understanding and knowledge of the latest technology.”
Meanwhile, Hotayi’s senior IT manager Yeoh Shin Chian said since the official collaboration with TAR UC officiated in March last year until now, they were pleased with the progress of the six final year projects.
“Although these are long-term projects, we are seeing positive results even at the early stages for some of these projects, hence give us the confidence on TAR UC’s students capability.”
