2SHELL STATIONS GO GREEN

- GOH THEAN HOWE

SHELL Damansara Jaya and Shell Taman Connaught have become the first in the Asia Pacific retail fuel industry to be awarded a Green

Building Index (GBI) certification.

The move is part of Shell Malaysia’s plan to reduce its carbon footprint by 50 per cent in six years.

“By 2025, Shell Malaysia will reduce our carbon footprint by 50 per cent,” said Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd and Shell Timur Sdn Bhd managing director Shairan Huzani Husain at the GBI certification presentation ceremony.

The implemented GBI elements include the installation of a solar photo voltaic (PV) system to generate clean electricity, replacement of conventional bathroom fittings with waterless urinals and water-saving taps, installation of LED lighting to lower energy consumption, as well as a monitoring systems that will alert the station of any consumption inconsistency to avoid wastage of resources.

“With these initiatives, the impact is equivalent to saving 48 trees a month. In a year, the outlets could each save up to 300,000 litres of water a year and about RM22,750 through solar radiation improvements,” said Shairan.

“When the new category for the Retail Fuel industry was introduced, we decided to put on our thinking caps to rethink and retrofit smart solutions and design elements into our stations,” he added.

Currently, Shell Malaysia has 950 stations and 14 terminals nationwide.
