JUDGING from the buzz surrounding Game of Thrones, it is clear that this HBO television series is one of the most watched series in the world. First hitting the small screens in 2011, the legendary show reaches its eighth and final season this year.

Garnering a cult following everywhere, GameofThrones has made waves across the entertainment landscape, transcending the world of Westeros to firmly anchor itself in modern pop culture.

Lines from the show such as “Winter is coming” and “You know nothing, Jon Snow” have even become catchphrases across the globe.

Well, winter is here. To celebrate the arrival of the much-anticipated season of the fantasy-drama series this Sunday, adidas recently unveiled the brand’s reimagination of the iconic houses and characters of Westeros in its highly popular running shoes.

The collaboration between adidas Running and Game of Thrones features a collection of six limited edition Ultraboost, each carefully designed to represent the characteristics, colours and details of the heroes and villains to which they refer.

The shoes are inspired by the noble families and warring factions of the Seven Kingdoms and beyond The Wall; with subtle references, special design and detailing coming together with the house colours and mottos.

Details include their faction’s sigil on the tongue and motto on the heel tag.

For example, the House Lannister Ultraboost heel tag sports the motto “Hear Me Roar” while the House Stark Ultraboost

features the Stark motto “Winter is coming”. The White Walker Ultraboost, on the other hand, features the phrase “Winter is here”.

HOUSE MOTIFS

Jeff Peters, vice-president of licensing and retail at HBO, said: “Over the lifespan of the series, Game of Thrones fans have shown their love of innovative and quality licenced products that create new opportunities to interact with their favourite show. We are very excited to release our adidas Ultraboost x Game of Thrones collection to celebrate the upcoming final season with them.” House motifs inspired by the show come together to create bold and distinct colourways. The adidas x Game of Thrones Ultraboost silhouettes fuse performanceoriented footwear technology with a striking and cultural visual aesthetic.

Each shoe in the collection features signature Boost midsole technology for unlimited energy return, a Primeknit upper for lightweight performance, and the iconic heel counter for adaptability and support, as well as a variety of extravagant materials on the shoes.

Alberto Uncini Manganelli, general manager of adidas Running, said: “When brands and television series alike are able to move beyond their primary platform and spill into popular culture, we see inspiration. The project is yet another example of our open source strategy by which we treat our most iconic silhouettes as a canvas upon which we can tell a story.”

Retailing at RM850, the limited-edition adidas x Game of Thrones Ultraboost is available at adidas.com.my and select adidas Sports Performance stores.
