Apple’s next generation of entertainm­ent, news, gaming and financial services is supported by a rich ecosystem of apps, writes Izwan Ismail

While almost all the other mobile vendors are concentrat­ing on new hardware, Apple decided to tackle a new playing field — services and the eco-system around its devices.

The Cupertino-based company knows that a great device is one that is supported by a strong offering of services.

Cook, in his usual casual and muted coloured outfit, elaborated on how Apple plans to seamlessly integrate its hardware, software and services to meet consumers’ needs in the simplest way possible, with

Apple is on target to surpass 10 billion transactio­ns this year with its Apple Pay payment gateway, and it is expected to make it available in 40 countries.

While Apple Pay is already a success story for the company, it is now looking at how it can transform the credit card industry.

“While we all need them, there are some things about the credit card experience that can be so much better,” Cook said, hinting that the new payment service by Apple will change the credit card industry altogether.

The new payment service called Apple Card will take the burden of using credit cards away from consumers.

“The new Apple Card will eliminate fees, lower interest rates and secure privacy,” he said.

Apple Pay vice-president Jennifer Bailey said users will just need to sign up on their iPhone, and they will get a software version of a card in minutes that they can start using.

“The Apple Card can be used worldwide wherever Apple Pay is accepted. It lives inside the Wallet app, and it can track spending and other budgeting features.”
