Design your own studies at UTM

-

UTMSPACE, the corporate body responsible for planning, managing and implementing lifelong learning programmes at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), is offering opportunities for Malaysians and the global community to attain a higher education with its innovative programmes.

One of its unique products is an interdisciplinary degree, where students can design their own studies. The Bachelor of General Studies is offered at UTM’s main campus in Johor Baru.

Such degree was first introduced in Europe for those who wanted to study a wide range of subjects and meet the requirements of their higher-learning institutions.

The programme has long been established in developed countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Australia and Singapore.

This dynamic concept provides students with a high ability to adapt to the latest technological trends. Thus, graduates can progressively move towards the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0) and digital economy.

A fluid and organic curriculum is one of the elements in the Higher Education 4.0 ecosystem, which emphasises knowledge, industry and humanity.

This programme incorporates that kind of curriculum, in which students are free to take courses relevant to their contemporary needs in management, science, computing, technology and humanities.

This means students can choose the subjects that meet their career needs. They can seek guidance and advice from the university’s academic and career advisory body to make the right choice.

This programme is based on the student-oriented New Academia Learning Innovation (NALI) model and a blendedlearning approach. It covers lessons based on problem solving,

real-time scenarios and case studies through an online and face-to-face learning approach.

Besides general studies, the Bachelor of Business Administration (International Business) is another programme by UTM.

It provides candidates with current insight from the business world, and a glimpse of the future through a structured four-year curriculum.

Through this programme, students will learn strategy and business ethics, as well as understanding products and service development. This programme is also conducted at UTM Johor Baru campus.

The UTM main campus is the only Malaysian public research university located in the Iskandar economic region in Johor.

Iskandar Malaysia has an international business environment and, therefore, students will experience first-hand developments within the region.

They will also engage in active learning that reflects the impact of regionalism, nationalism and international change towards enterprises and businesses.

The courses are also tailored with flexibility for working professionals, who are keen to upgrade and improve their skills. At the end of the programme, graduates will be able to initiate their own start-ups, prepare to work in large corporations, or become a trendsetter in global industries.

Moreover, UTM provides a complete and up-to-date infrastructure for students. They will use an e-learning system to strengthen their understanding in each subject they undertake.

For that purpose, UTM has two libraries to provide quality learning materials, such as books, theses, journals and learning videos. The libraries have records of research and an advanced information retrieval system that will help students throughout their studies.
