Varsities should support students in need
to the article, “Students getting by on a meal a day”, (NST, March 19).
We have been hearing a lot about students who are struggling to survive their university life.
Most students wonder whether to focus on education or money.
They find part-time jobs where they must spend their weekends working instead of studying.
These students have to sacrifice their study time to earn some money.
There was a university student who fainted because she had not eaten for two days.
As a student myself, I cannot go through a day without having breakfast and I cannot imagine her suffering.
I realise that students who do not have enough money tend to buy “nasi bujang” where the meal is rice, a plain soup, omelette and “sambal belacan”.
Students need to consume nutritious meals to stay healthy.
Some students are afraid to talk about their predicament.
Therefore, I would like to recommend that universities provide free food for the students by providing a section where students can simply take the food when they are hungry.
Also, universities should help by collecting the data of the students. Once the data has been collected, the students can be categorised based on their parents’ income.
By doing so, universities can offer aid in the form of sponsorship and accommodation.
Students who are in need should be helped because it will ease their burden.
A hundred ringgit can mean the world to some people.
