TAR UC embraces innovation with I2 Hub

-

ARTIFICIAL Intelligence (AI) is expected to change human lifestyle in the future. Some of the common terms that we hear, such as robotics, big data, machine learning and Internet of things, will soon be part of our lives and redefine the way we work.

Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) has taken a step forward in embracing technological innovation with the establishment of the Integrated Innovation Hub (I2 Hub), which was launched in August last year.

It is the pivotal point for TAR UC to synergise the latest technological developments towards boosting education. By integrating the relevant expertise from TAR UC’s different faculties, the I2 Hub acts as a catalyst where creative innovations and groundbreaking applications are discovered, especially in its four areas of focus — Smart Campus for Education 4.0, Industry 4.0, Agriculture 4.0 and corporate social responsibility service.

Under I2 Hub, students are given the opportunity to work on a project called Cashierbook. It is an app which utilises social media analytics and blockchain technology to enable fast and secured intelligent e-commerce transactions. Its target users are end consumers, as well as retailers who can confidently utilise Cashierbook for genuine and authentic online transactions through the Blockchain Powered Verification, as well as added intelligent technologies, such as social media analytics to provide intelligent recommendations for a targeted and effective e-commerce experience.

Students Johnson Chin See How, who is studying in TAR UC’s Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) in Software Engineering programme, is part of the team that manages the Cashierbook app, which went live in August.

“This is a fulfilling part of my study life in TAR UC because I am

gaining valuable experience to manage and troubleshoot a mobile app. There is a lot of expectation in ensuring the app is constantly functioning well. My team members and I are guided by our lecturer, Dr Tang Tiong Yew, who is the main lead for Cashierbook. The knowledge and skills that we have gained from the programme, such as from the Software Evolution and Maintenance subject, has helped us in managing the app,” he said.

I2 Hub has paved the way for TAR UC to provide consultancy services to the industry in implementing real-time Industry 4.0 solutions. Through the collaboration of expertise from TAR UC’s faculties, the area of focus is in creating and utilising Industry 4.0 solutions like machine-to-machine communication, big data analytics and incorporating AI into the decision making processes in businesses. For example, the Kian Joo Can Factory Bhd has engaged expertise from TAR UC to provide consultancy and solutions to increase efficiency and productivity in its production line.

Its general manager, Ang Kok Jun, said through TAR UC’s support in big data analytics and AI applications in the supply chain, Kian Joo would move closer to its goal of adopting Industry 4.0.

For more information on TAR UC’s industry-relevant programmes you can visit TAR UC’s campuses nationwide in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Perak, Johor, Pahang and Sabah. Extended counselling sessions will be held from 10am to 4pm daily, including during the weekends until May 17 (excluding public holidays). Alternatively, visit www.tarc.edu.my.
