KL date for American stand-up comedian
ONE of the United States’ hottest stand-up comedians today, Iliza Shlesinger will showcase her first comedy show in Kuala Lumpur on June 16. Shlesinger, 36, was the 2008 winner of NBC’s Last Comic Standing and went on to host the syndicated dating show Excused and the TBS comedy game show Separation Anxiety. In2017,shebrieflyhostedherown late-night talk show Truth & Iliza.
Shlesinger hails from New York and grew up in Dallas, Texas. She performed with ComedySportz Dallas while studying film at the University of Kansas.
Moving to Los Angeles after graduation, she became a popular member of the Whiteboy Comedy group of standup comedians, who regularly performed at The Improv in Hollywood. In 2007, Shlesinger won Myspace’s So You Think You’re Funny contest and since then, she has been a household name on television. Her credits include E! Network’s Forbes Celebrity 100, TV Guide’s America’s Next Top Producer, John Oliver’s New York Stand Up Show, History Channel’s History Of A Joke.
The following year, she became the first woman, and the youngest winner of NBC’s Last Comic Standing, in the series’ sixth season.
Shlesinger also produced Surviving The Holidays, a History Channel holiday special, and narrated the 2009 documentary
Imagine It: The Power Of Imagination. She hosted the comedic online series The Weakly News on TheStream.tv from 2007 to 2012 and the dating reality competition series Excused from 2011 to 2013.
Shlesinger’s first comedy album and video, War Paint, was recorded on Dec 1, 2012 at The Lakewood Theatre in Dallas, Texas, and released on Netflix a year later. Three years later, she came up with the stand-up special Freezing Hot which was recorded in Denver, Colorado for Netflix.
Her jokes often highlight social issues with a comical twist and she is known to be bold on stage. Shlesinger’s humour puts a fresh spin on gender issues and her astute observations of American life focus on what it means to be a 30-something woman living and working in today’s world.
