‘DON’T COMPARE ME WITH RUFINO’
Selangor’s new signing Nigerian Ifedayo wants to be his own man
SELANGOR’S first midseason signing, Ifedayo Olusegun does not want to be labelled as a replacement for 2018 Super League top scorer Rufino Segovia.
The Nigerian only hopes his presence will give the team an extra edge as they aim to win at least one trophy this season.
Following Rufino’s injury, Selangor has de-registered the Spaniard to make way for 28year-old Ifedayo to sharpen the rather blunt Selangor attack.
The former Melaka United
striker said he hopes to repay coach B. Sathianathan’s faith in him.
Ifedayo said he aims to score at least eight goals for Selangor, which he did for Melaka.
“I’m here in Selangor as a new player and I do not want to be seen as anyone’s replacement, including Rufino,” said Ifedayo.
“Rufino and I are two different players and I want to focus on this team in my own way to help my teammates.”
Selangor snapped up the former Al-Hidd player, when the second transfer window opened on May 2, with a contract till the end of the season.
Sathianathan had worked with Ifedayo during his time at Felda United in 2017 before he moved to Melaka during the midseason transfers last season.
Sathianathan believes Ifedayo has the quality to prop up the Red Giants in Rufino’s absence.
He will make his debut against Kedah in the Super League on Wednesday at Shah Alam Stadium.
“With Ifedayo around, at least the team will have added strength in attack but as a coach, I do not want to put too much pressure on him. He, himself, knows the job he has to carry to help the team.”
