WEE WERN HAPPY TO BE ‘UNNOTICED’

Malaysian not seeded in British Open

- REPORTS BY FADHLI ISHAK fadhli.ishak@nst.com.my

LOW Wee Wern is happy to sneak under the radar going into the British Open at the University of Hull on May 20-26.

The World No 28 will be unseeded

in the US$162,000 (RM674,986) competition where she will face England’s Fiona Moverley in the opening round.

The 28-year-old, who is on the comeback trail after suffering serious knee injuries, has managed to string together positive results recently which arguably belie her current ranking.

She scalped three higherranked Egyptians en route to the Macau Open final last month and then backed it up with a run to the semi-finals of the Asian Individual Open in Bukit Jalil last week.

“The British Open is only my second or third PSA Platinum event since coming back last year,” said Wee Wern.

“I am definitely looking forward to playing the top girls again which is something I have missed. I will be unseeded due to my ranking and again, I will definitely be the underdog there.

“Performance-wise I am getting better. I am definitely not in the top-10 (quality of play) just yet but there are patches I can match them.

“My game is still a work in progress and there are always areas where I need to keep improving on. It is important for me to keep playing more matches against top-10 players.”

The Penang-born picked-up some minor niggles, including a calf strain, during the Macau Open. She disclosed that she will be working with her physiotherapist to improve them before the British Open.

Wee Wern and Fiona have met once with the former winning in five games at the 2016 China Open.

Iam definitely looking forward to playing the top girls again which is something I have missed.”
