‘Perodua strong sales boost market outlook’

-

The Perodua Suppliers Association (P2SA) is optimistic about the car parts market outlook ahead based on encouraging sales growth at Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua), Malaysia’s second national car marque.

Perodua recorded a sales increase of 9.5 per cent to 82,700 vehicles in the first four months of this year, compared with 75,500 sold in the same period last year.

In a statement yesterday, P2SA said the sales performance indicated that the carmaker was on track to reach its target of selling 231,000 units by year-end.

“As a representative for all 125 automotive component suppliers to Perodua, the outlook works well for the ecosystem, despite the pessimism in the automotive industry in general,” said P2SA president Musa Zahidin Ahmad Zaidee.

Perodua had recently announced a sales target of 231,000 vehicles for this year, up 1.7 per cent from 227,243 units sold last year.

It also committed to buying at least RM5.4 billion worth of components this year, based on the sales target.

“This growth is phenomenal as the industry only grew about six per cent for the January-April last year versus this year based on our internal figures.

“Based on our estimation, the industry grew to 193,200 units in the first four months of the year from 182,200 in the same period last year, an increase of 11,000 units.”

Musa said Perodua had been committed to enhancing the domestic automotive ecosystem, with more than 90 per cent of all its models using local content.

He said Perodua also assisted P2SA members in driving operational transformation and providing affordable yet high-quality mobility to all Malaysians.

The association said Perodua had developed the local supplier support system under its programmes.

“A prime example of how Perodua assists and supports local suppliers is via its investment in the mould and tooling requirements, which has reduced the overall financing costs for our members.

“This began when Perodua Axia started production in 2014 and has been done for every other models since,” said Musa.

Under the initiative, Perodua would purchase upfront the required moulds and tooling from the respective manufacturers for suppliers to make components.

The suppliers could then adjust their production costs as they no longer have to acquire financing to purchase the moulds and tooling, he added.
