-

AS a fully-unified cashless system goes online in Universiti Utara Malaysia in Sintok, Kedah, the campus community of more than 20,000 students, lecturers and staff are now able to enjoy all kinds of financial transactions through an e-wallet, including zakat disbursement.

A wholly-owned subsidiary of Green Packet Bhd, kiplePay Sdn Bhd has recently entered a strategic collaboration with UUM to launch a fully-integrated cashless campus.

From buying books at the university bookstore to basic necessities at the convenience store, and ordering their favourite food at the

cafeteria, all can be paid using kiplePay.

The memorandum of agreement (MoA) was signed between UUM vice-chancellor Professor Dr Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani, and Green Packet and kiplePay chief executive officer Tan Kay Yen.

The ceremony was witnessed by Kedah Youth and Sports, Tourism, Arts and Culture, and Entrepreneurship Development Committee chairman Mohd Asmirul Anuar Aris and National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) chairman Wan Saiful Wan Jan.

“The UUM Cashless Community is the first step we are embarking on to achieve the ‘Smart Campus status’,” said Bashawir.

“For a start, the university has taken the initiative to distribute zakat to students through kiplePay.

“A total of RM340,000 had been disbursed since December 2018, making UUM the first public university in Malaysia to distribute zakat to students through an e-wallet app.”

Tan said the collaboration between kiplePay and UUM was testament to the transformation of Malaysia’s business enterprises and universities to greater economic efficiency.

“It is not just the students, lecturers and UUM staff who will enjoy the convenience provided by kiplePay.

“I believe this collaboration marks a great initiative to transform and digitalise the education industry while expanding the cashless ecosystem further in Malaysia.”

Asmirul was glad that UUM and kiplePay were joining the state government’s efforts to create a cashless society.

“It is important for the young generation today, especially the students, to start adopting e-wallet to develop a keen sense of money management,” he said.

kiplePay is an e-wallet issuer licensed by Bank Negara Malaysia, where it operates on two fronts, namely a cashless payment gateway for businesses and e-wallet for consumers.
