CAPTAIN NOBODY – CHAPTER 10, 11 & 12

Newt wakes up only to find out that his Mum was on the way to the hospital. He worried about Chris who was still the main topic of the local newspaper. He also sympathised with Reggie Ratner since some Fillmore troublemakers had emptied 50 garbage cans on his lawn.

He went to school in his Captain Nobody outfit since he couldn’t find any clean clothing. Some classmates made fun of him while others pitied him. Mrs Young sent him to the Principal’s office, worried that Newt wasn’t coping with his brother’s situation. After a discussion with the school counsellor and nurse, they decided that it would be best for Newt that they welcomed Captain Nobody.

Newt was the topic of the day. Cecil was excited and handed out walkie-talkies to Newt and JJ. Newt was amazed at Cecil’s optimism and insisted that nothing ever happened in Appleton!

As the day progressed, the Captain Nobody costume was getting more reactions of sympathy than of wonder. On his way home, he was summoned by Cecil over the walkie-talkie. Filled with curiosity, Newt headed to the location only to find a big bass drum in a Dumpster. Cecil needed Newt to help get the drum down since he was afraid of heights. Cecil insisted the fearless Captain Nobody could do it since he wasn’t supposed to be just anybody – he was Captain Nobody.

Inspired, Newt carefully climbed over the piles of boxes, lawn cuttings and plastic garbage bags. He managed to get it into the waiting red wagon with a thump. He beat the drum with his open hand in triumph and the sound was good. The save was worth it and it left Newt feeling pumped from his first adventure until something grabbed his ankle on the way down.

The hand belonged to Mr Clay, the local locksmith. Newt recognised him and realised that Mr Clay was probably lost when he held out an empty medicine bottle and he seemed unsure of what day it was. Newt quickly introduced himself as Captain Nobody who was going to take him home.

They arrived at Mr Clay’s home and Newt was about to ring the doorbell when Mr Clay seemed to realise that his wife would probably be worried and that it would be best if he rang the doorbell himself. Newt nodded and walked back to the sidewalk where Cecil was waiting. Mrs Clay opened the door and was relieved to see her husband. Mr Clay quickly explained that Captain Nobody had brought him home, leaving both boys chuffed as they had saved a man!
