University of Automotive Malaysia (DRB-HICOM University) is offering three new financial aid for students to pursue tertiary studies at the university.

The new scholarships — DERMASISWA B40 Full Scholarship, DRB-HICOM Apprentice Scholar Programme Full Scholarship and Partial Scholarships — are under its financial aid schemes worth RM52 million.

DRB-HICOM University vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Omar Osman said that the scholarships are the latest initiatives by the university to help those who excel in their studies but are unable to afford the high costs of tertiary studies at private higher learning institutions.

“Due to financial issues, many promising young Malaysians may not be able to fulfil their true potential and their talents would be wasted as a result. This would be a great loss for our automotive industry, and for our country. Through these new financial aid programmes, we are able to provide opportunities to many more excellent students whom we hope one day will become industry leaders and important contributors to nation-building,” he said.

The DERMASISWA B40 scholarship is targeted at students with families from the B40 group category (total average household Omar Osman income of less than RM3,860 per month).

“The scholarship will cover full tuition fees, accommodation fees and monthly allowances for applicants who are interested to pursue the Diploma in Automotive Technology, Diploma in Vehicle Assembly Management and Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health programmes. These courses are selected due to the higher demand for more skillful workers in the automotive industry.”

Students whose family falls under the B40 category can apply for this scholarship. Candidates who meet the criteria will undergo an interview with the university’s panellists before being awarded the scholarship.

For students who are interested to pursue their bachelor’s degree, the university is now offering the DRB-HICOM Apprentice Scholar Programme to candidates who come from families with a total average household income of RM8,000 and below.

Besides receiving 100 per cent tuition fee waiver, accommodation and a monthly allowance of RM350, the scholarship recipients will also have the chance to be employed by DRB-HICOM group of companies after graduation.

“Candidates who are not successful in obtaining the DERMASISWA B40 and Apprentice Scholar Programme scholarship will be considered for this partial scholarship.”
