DARE to be different. A stall selling coffee cendol at the Ramadan bazaar in Masjid Tanah Ria has been drawing the crowd from the first day of Ramadan.

Customers would stop at the Kupi Sojuk

Atok Kayo stall, run by Nur Suria Abdul Haziz, to check out what coffee mixed with cendol tasted like.

Nur Suria, 30, said she started the business — with help from her husband Mohd Shahrizul Mohd Kaus, 39, and their children — with only a jar of coffee.

“As this was our first time selling at the bazaar, we decided to start small, with only one jar. We also offer free cendol and ice cream as additional flavours.

“We never expected that by the second week of Ramadan. Customers had grown in numbers, including repeat buyers. Now, we have to prepare up to five jars, at least,” she said when met at her stall yesterday.

Nur Suria said a jar could serve up to 40 cups of coffee cendol.

She added most of the stall patrons like the taste of coffee cendol, because they said it was ‘unique’ and offers a new drinking experience.

According to Nur Suria, the business contributes to the family income as her husband does not earn much as a lorry driver. She said her first attempt at selling drinks at the Ramadan bazaar had received encouraging response.

“Before this, I was selling drinks on a small basis since February last year. I decided to became an agent for Kupi Sojuk, and business has been good since then.”

College student Zahin Muqri, 21, said he became hooked on coffee cendol from the first day he tasted it.

“The coffee tastes like no other. After the first time, you will crave for it,” he said.

Army man Mohd Qalus Nazri, 35, said he took time to visit the bazaar during a short holiday back at his hometown in Masjid Tanah, just to enjoy the unique taste.

“This coffee cendol has the potential to go big,” he added.
