Man pleads guilty to posting offensive remarks about cops
KUALA LUMPUR: A 30-year-old jobless man pleaded guilty in the Sessions Court here to circulating offensive remarks against policemen three months ago.
Mohammad Shahrizal Md Shah Rudin made the plea when the charge was read to him before judge M. M. Edwin Paramjothy.
Shahrizal admitted that he had, via his Facebook account under the name Riz Mhmd, made an offensive remark with intent to hurt others at 8pm on April 28.
The remarks were read at the Communication Office and Commercial Crime Investigation Department, Bukit Aman police headquarters on April 30.
The offence falls under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000, or up to a year in jail, or both, if convicted; and a fine of RM1,000 for every day the offence is repeated after conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Annur Atiqah Abd Hadi asked the court to mete out a deterrent sentence to the accused.
However, Shahrizal, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a minimum sentence stating he was remorseful.
“I have lost my job and also need to support my ageing parents,” he said.
The court set bail at RM3,000 with one surety and fixed July 14 for sentencing.
