EC: Follow voting times on voter cards

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Chini by-election voters have been urged to follow the suggested voting times on their voter cards so that social distancing could be maintained at polling centres tomorrow.

Election Commission (EC) deputy chairman Dr Azmi Sharom said voters should plan their time and not go out to vote at the last minute, despite polling centres being open from 8am to 5.30pm.

“This time, the EC has indicated the recommended time to vote on all voter cards.

“For voters who have their cards and know their voting information, they can head straight to their ‘streams’ and do not need to check at EC counters,” he said yesterday.

Voters without voter cards can reconfirm their voting information a day before polling day.

Azmi said the recommended voting times was to prevent crowding and to ensure that social distancing measures were in place.

This, he said, was in line with the standard operating procedures as required in the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.

“All voters and those involved in the Chini by-election are reminded to always obey the law and adhere to Covid-19 prevention guidelines on polling day.”

Azmi said voters could check updated information on the by-election via https://pengundi.spr.gov.my, the EC hotline at 03-88927018, or through the MySPR Semak mobile application. Voters can send a message to check by typing SPRSEMAKIC number and send to 15888.

He said voters were reminded to bring along their identification cards, voter cards or a note of their voting information to be shown to the polling clerk.

Chini has 20,990 registered voters, comprising 20,972 regular voters and 18 early voters. A majority of the voters (56 per cent) are aged 40 and below. The three-cornered by-election tomorrow will see Barisan Nasional’s Mohd Sharim Md Zain taking on independent candidates, Tengku Datuk Zainul Hisham Tengku Hussin and Mohd Syukri Mohd Ramli.
