PROTON Holdings Bhd’s car sales surged last month as the company benefits from the rebound during the Recovery Movement Control Order period.

Proton sold 9,623 units in its second best sales month this year as incentives from the government and higher demand pushed up the country’s total industry volume.

“Proton’s sales last month also represented a 69.5 per cent growth over May and a 26.3 per cent increase over the same period last year.

“With a year-to-date market share of 21.2 per cent, Proton’s results for the first half show a 6.5 per cent increase against the same period last year.”

The national carmaker said this was led by the Saga, which celebrated its 35th anniversary by posting its best sales performance in 70 months.

“Its sales of 4,447 units were the highest since August 2014,” it said.

Proton said the X70 retained its position as the best-selling C-segment sport utility vehicle (SUV) in the country. With 1,909 units sold last month, the X70 was also the best-selling SUV overall for the first half of this year.

“Persona retained its position as the best-seller in the B-segment sedan category for the second consecutive month despite losing more than two months of sales this year. Its cumulative volume is 25.1 per cent ahead of last year.

“As for the Iriz and Exora, the latter remained at the top of the C-segment multipurpose vehicle market while Proton’s B-segment hatchback powered its way to third place in its category.”

Proton Edar chief executive officer Roslan Abdullah said sales in the first full month of business since February had been encouraging.

“While we remain cautiously optimistic about the second half of this year, the demand for Malaysian cars in general, and Proton vehicles in particular, points towards increased consumer confidence in our products.

“This interest has also been buoyed by the sales tax holiday,” he added.
