1,575 NEW CASES, 3 DEATHS

This marks the seventh consecutiv­e day of fewer than 2,000 new virus cases

ATOTAL of 1,575 new Covid-19 infections were reported yesterday, marking the seventh consecutiv­e day of fewer than 2,000 new cases.

This brings the cumulative number of infections to 320,939, said the Health Ministry.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said a majority of the new cases involved local transmissi­ons with 1,568 while the rest are import cases linked to a Malaysian and six foreigners.

Selangor still recorded the highest number of new cases at 751, of which 694 were from clusters and close contacts screening.

“This is followed by Sarawak with 173 cases and Johor with 135. There are 69 cases linked to prisons and Immigratio­n detention depot clusters.

“There are 57 cases in Sabah, 108 in Kuala Lumpur, 32 in Negri Sembilan, 132 in Penang, 44 in Perak, 23 in Kedah, 25 in Melaka, 43 in Kelantan, four in Pahang, 16 in Terengganu, three in Labuan, four in Putrajaya and 25 in Perlis,” he said yesterday.

On deaths, three Covid-19 patients, two men and a woman aged between 59 and 69 from Sabah, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, died yesterday, raising the death toll to 1,203.

They had underlying health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity.

Dr Noor Hisham said 2,042 more patients had recovered from the virus, while 147 were being treated at Intensive Care Units, with 67 requiring breathing assistance.

On new clusters, he said there were 10, with five involving workplace infections, while the rest were community transmissi­ons.

The 10 clusters were detected in Selangor (three), Johor (one), Penang (one), Perak (one), Terengganu (one)and Sarawak (three).

Dr Noor Hisham said one cluster was discovered after two of its index cases from Perak travelled to multiple states, including Sabah, for work purposes and later discovered they had been infected with the virus on March 3.

He said the Jalan Laksamana cluster involved two index cases, Cases 305,586 and 305,587.

“The cluster involved the Manjung and Kuala Kangsar districts in Perak; Lembah Pantai and Kepong districts in Kuala Lumpur; Kota Belud district in Sabah; Bachok district in Kelantan; Kuala Nerus district in Terengganu; and, Timur Laut district in Penang.

“Both index cases for this cluster have a history of attending training that was conducted from Feb 22 to 26 in Manjung, Perak.

“Up to yesterday (Thursday), out of 59 individual­s screened, 23 were found positive.”
