1,354 new infections, 4 deaths, says D-G

KUALA LUMPUR: The daily Covid19 numbers remain at four digits, with 1,354 new infections up to noon yesterday.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 1,340 were local infections while 14 were imported.

Nearly 78 per cent of the local infections involved Malaysians.

Selangor recorded the highest number of new cases at 577, followed by Sarawak (178), Penang (154) and Johor (121).

This brings the total number of cases to 323,763, with 16,279 active cases.

“Sixty-four cases were linked to clusters in prisons, Tembok Tapah, Tembok Sungai Udang, Tembok Pengkalan Chepa, Jalan Harapan Prison, and Tembok Taiping.”

The number of daily recoveries was 1,782, bringing the total number of patients who had recovered to 306,274, or 94.6 per cent.

Four deaths were recorded, increasing the death toll to 1,210.

Two deaths were reported in Kuala Lumpur and one each in Selangor and Sarawak.

All deaths involved Malaysian men with comorbidit­ies.

The Health Ministry detected three new clusters yesterday.

Dr Noor Hisham said two of the new clusters — Jalan Tun Mutalib Tiga in Johor and Jalan Sutera in Selangor — were workplace clusters.

For the Jalan Tun Mutalib Tiga cluster in Kota Tinggi, the index case (309,258) tested positive for Covid-19 on March 5.

The cluster involved workers from a factory there and up to yesterday, 469 people had been screened, with 10 confirmed cases.

For the Jalan Sutera cluster in Hulu Langat, a targeted screening of a factory since March 10 found eight cases from 26 people tested.

The ministry detected a community cluster in the Begalak cluster in the Sibu and Song districts in Sarawak.

“The first case was detected on March 10 involving index case 317,522, and the outbreak was detected in the Sungai Begalak, Batang Rajang, Song and residentia­l localities in Sibu and Song districts.

“A total of 335 people have been tested, with 49 confirmed cases.”

He said five clusters ended yesterday.

They were the Batu 57, Jalan Kuala Selangor, Tanjung Megah, Tembok Renggam and Jalan Jelatek clusters.

A total of 424 clusters remain active with 64 reporting new cases yesterday.
