Indonesia aims to host 2032 Olympics

-

The Indonesian government plans to develop Bogor’s Hambalang as a training centre for senior athletes, said Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali

“We are seeking to see Hambalang as a (training) centre for senior athletes and athletes who are ready to compete,” Zainudin said during a press conference at the Presidential Office here, as quoted by the Antara news agency on Monday.

He was speaking after attending a limited cabinet meeting on “Big Design of National Sports and the National Games XX and National Para Games XVI in Papua” chaired by President Joko Widodo.

He said the plan was to build 10 training centres in a few regions.

“We will adjust to the existing potential. The basic ones are for talents at elementary level.”

He said Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim had responded positively to the plan.

The facility would be open to children who have potential and those who have been selected at the junior high school level.

“Those at the senior high school level will be sent to our schools for athletes,” Zainudin said.

He said this was part of efforts to develop national sports, including hosting major international events, adding that the government had set short- and middle-term targets for 2024, 2028 and 2032.

“We know the 2024 Olympics will be held in Paris, France. The 2020 Olympics in Tokyo has been postponed to 2021 and the 2028 Olympics (will be) in LA (Los Angeles), the United States.

“There is a hope for us to win the bid to host the 2032 Olympics.”

He said Indonesia had set a few targets on hosting the Olympics in future.

“In this big design, we have already set the target to be in the top 10-ranked candidates in 2032 either for the Olympics or Paralympics since our disabled athletes’ ranks are not far behind.”

He said to meet these targets, support was urgently needed in terms of funds and infrastructure.

“We need the support of ministries, institutions and stateowned and private enterprises. The most important is support from regional administrations.”
