RELIEF FOR DOLLAH AT LAST

Elephants end poor run of Super League results

- K. RAJAN nstsport@nst.com.my

DOLLAH Salleh, the Sri Pahang caretaker coach, could finally breathe a sigh of relief — their team’s bad run is over. Pahang collected full points for the first time in four matches after beating Sabah 2-1 in a Super League match at Darulmakmur Stadium in Kuantan on Tuesday.

The Elephants overpowered the Rhinos with goals from Ukrainian forward Yevhen Bokhashvili (55th minute) and English midfielder Lee Tuck (70th).

Sabah’s Indonesian winger Saddil Ramdani reduced the deficit with a goal in the 80th minute.

It was a hard-fought win but much welcomed by Pahang who had earlier lost to Selangor (3-1) and Perak (2-0) while getting only a 0-0 draw with Melaka in their opening matches.

Dollah, parachuted in as caretaker coach after American Thomas Dooley was “rested” due to poor results, said he is glad to claim the win.

He felt that the Pahang players are finally getting into strides after a slow start to the league.

The former national coach said: “There were positive changes but there’s plenty of room for us to improve as we are nowhere near the level that I want the team to play at.

“The good thing is everyone stepped up. For example, Lee Tuck’s performance in the last two matches were inconsistent and he only started to show improvement in the game against Melaka.

“Bokhashvili is not fully fit because he had not trained for nearly six months. He has a striker’s touch but he has only been performing to 40-50 per cent of his real ability.”

Pahang have moved out of the relegation zone with four points while Sabah remain winless with only one point after four matches.

Sabah coach Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto said their imports: Liberian forward Sam Johnson, Macedonian centreback Risto Mitrevski, Indonesian Saddil Ramdani and Gabonese midfielder Levy Madinda lacked match fitness as they had just come out of quarantine.
